Costa Rica and Central America Promote Small Hotels in Europe

August 22nd, 2008 by Carolyn Ramer

Small hotels in Costa Rica has decided to join forces with similar hotels from Central America in order to promote themselves in Europe as well as North America.

At least 300 hotels throughout Central America have come together through the Central American Federation of Small Hotels in order to promote a multi-destination option to US and European tour operators and travel agencies.  Instead of individually offering tour operators the average 15 - 20 room availability, the Federation will be able to offer a combined 6,000 room availability.

During the month of September, Costa Rica will host IV Central American Small Hotel Forum in which hotel owners will analyze the market in order to come up with marketing strategies to deal with the industry’s competitiveness.  So far a total of 100 hotel owners are expected to participate in this year’s forum.

Themes such as business integration strategies, competitiveness, economic and environmental sustainability, marketing as well as modernization will be discussed in the upcoming event.

One of the small hotel industry’s main issues is its limited room availability due to insufficient funds to expand or space limitation itself.  Personnel’s training is also another issue which has set back the small hotel owners within the market.  Many of these hotels also lack the knowledge and funds to market themselves worldwide.

Costa Rica will seek to take advantage of its reputation within the environmental sector as well its leadership in the sustainable tourism field as well.  Although each country will highlight its resources, the hotels consortium will promote themselves as one.
