The South Pacific Coast Highway to be Finished in 2009
August 13th, 2008 by Carolyn Ramer
Three new bridges were inaugurated yesterday by government officials while other five are yet to be completed. One of the completed bridges has come to take the place of the 70 year old railroad bridge over the Paquita River which had been adapted for vehicle passage.
The Minister of Transportation, Karla Gonzalez, promised the residents of Quepos that by 2009, the South Pacific Coast Highway will be completed. Costa Rica’s president, Oscar Arias, was present at the ceremony and served as an honorary witness.
The South Pacific Coast Highway connects Quepos with Baru near Dominical. The 42 kilometer stretch is what is known as the South Pacific Coastal road and is currently a dirt road. The government stated that they will start asphalting this stretch this coming October and that it will be completed in one year.
The completing of this highway has long been awaited not only by residents but by the tourism sector as well. The South Pacific Coast is still a very pristine and unexploited region which offers breathtaking beaches and calm, warm ocean waters.
The 42 kilometer stretch is the only dirt road portion of the 238 kilometers which connects Barranca with Palmar Norte.
